Customs Intelligence officials made a significant discovery yesterday morning at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, recovering 38 gold bars weighing a total of 4.4 kilograms from an aircraft. According to a press release issued by Pradeep Kumar Sarker, Assistant Commissioner of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Department (CIID), the bars were concealed in two packets wrapped with sticky tape and left in the hand baggage storage compartment above the seats.
The recovery took place around 5:30 am immediately after the arrival of a Salam Air flight at the airport. Despite the discovery, no arrests were made in connection with the incident. The approximate value of the seized gold is Tk 4.5 crore.
CIID officials revealed that such methods of concealment are often employed by smugglers to evade detection and potential arrest. It is suspected that individuals with security clearances may act as accomplices, facilitating the removal of gold from the airport premises.
The investigation into this incident continues as authorities work to determine the origins and intended recipients of the abandoned gold bars.
